Cape Horn

Visit to Cape Horn and Beagle Channel

The 3 Dogs, RKJ, Ran Feinnes and John Simpson joined Skip Novak aboard Pelagic on the 7th December in Ushuaia.    After a quick visit to Puerto Williams to clear into Chile, they set off to explore the western part of the Beagle Channel, anchoring overnight where shelter could be onbtained.   The stunningscenary was enhanced by a visit to a fjord where 3 glaciers fall into the water.     From there they sailed out through Bahia Cook into the Southern Ocean and then east to Cape Horn, rounding the fersome Cape in a moderate wind and calm sea (why isn't it always like that?)     A visit to Cape Horn island the next day was arranged with the opportunity to meet the Chilean Navy Petty officer and his family who operate the Lighthouse and Radio Station.   The photograph above was taken from the Lightkeepers house and shows the Cape Horners memorial and the Cape in the background.
The trip was filmed by the BBC and will be shown in March 2009, with their recent trip to Afghanistan.     The 3 dogs are off to explore Frobisher Bay on Baffin island on the 8th January, the third and last aprt of the series.
