1991 Suhaili – Greenland, Kangerlugssuak
Two years after the Columbus voyage Suhaili took RKJ, Chris Bonington and a small team to the East Coast of Greenland to attempt to climb a virgin peak. The voyage went via Reykjavik in Iceland and then on to Kangerluggsuak Fjord, just north of the Arctic Circle, on the Greenland’s east coast. The climbers were landed, Suhaili left with two crew in a safe, relatively ice free bay, and the 100 kilometer trek to the chosen mountain, the Cathedral across glaciers commenced.

An attempt on the summit by Chris Bonington, Jim Lowther and RKJ failed as the peak they reached turned out to have a higher neighbour. The onset of snow forced a withdrawal. A second attempt by Bonington and Lowther also failed and since the weather window was closing, the party went back to Suhaili and set off for home. A succession of gales in August delayed the return by 10 days.
